Our paper "Supporting Hybrid Virtualization Orchestration for Edge Computing" has been accepted at ACM EdgeSys 2025, co-located with EuroSys.
Authors: Giovanni Bartolomeo, Patrick Sabanic, Nitinder Mohan, and Jörg Ott.
This work addresses how to efficiently manage heterogeneous virtualization technologies (containers and virtual machines) across distributed edge infrastructures. The research provides a unified orchestration framework for seamlessly managing both containers and VMs, with intelligent scheduling based on application requirements and infrastructure capabilities.
Edge infrastructures are heterogeneous by nature—legacy applications often require VM-based deployment while modern microservices use containers. Our work enables operators to leverage the strengths of each approach while providing a unified management interface.
The research directly enhances Oakestra, our open-source edge orchestration framework, with hybrid virtualization support being integrated into the platform.
