EdgeSys 2025 Best Paper Award announcement
Our paper "Supporting Hybrid Virtualization Orchestration for Edge Computing" by Giovanni Bartolomeo, Patrick Sabanic, Nitinder Mohan, and Jörg Ott has been awarded the Best Paper Award at ACM Workshop on Edge Systems, Analytics and Networking (EdgeSys) 2025! This work tackles one of the fundamental challenges in edge computing: efficiently managing heterogeneous virtualization technologies across distributed edge infrastructures.
Our research demonstrates how to seamlessly orchestrate both containers and virtual machines in edge environments, optimize resource utilization across different virtualization technologies, provide unified management interfaces for hybrid edge deployments, and enable flexible workload placement based on application requirements. This work directly contributes to the Oakestra project, our open-source edge orchestration framework, enabling edge operators to run legacy VM-based applications alongside modern containerized services, leverage hardware-specific virtualization features when needed, and maintain security isolation while maximizing resource efficiency.
Huge congratulations to Giovanni Bartolomeo and Patrick Sabanic for their excellent work on this project! EdgeSys brings together researchers and practitioners working on cutting-edge problems in edge computing. Being recognized with the Best Paper Award at this venue is a significant achievement and validates our approach to solving real-world edge deployment challenges.
